You might be in the midst of traffic in Delhi or in the banks of some river in Cambodia, in the flow of the current of an African river, or standing on a jetty at the gateway to Amazonia, each place always offers an originality to those who manage to observe them without prejudice or easy exoticism. For however great the effect of modernism, or, on the contrary, the limitations imposed by the scarcity of natural resources, societies tend to escape from imposed schemes and maintain intact their natural propensity towards movement and disorder. Under the crust of traditions and social conventions, life moves towards creative chaos following the unforeseeable lines of genius and the instinct of survival. With a little patience the traveler will realize how much effort – courageous, sometimes resulting funny, sometimes moving – lies under the apparent normality of everyday life. These photographs try, as far as possible, to tell the story of some of these efforts.
